2/9 Old farmhouse at Fir Tree Farm 26.5.83 (formerly listed as Fir Tree Farmhouse)
GV II
House. Circa 1600 incorporating C16 2-bay crosswing at W, altered and fronted in brick c1800. Timber frame roughcast and part weatherboarded. Red brick front. Steep old red tile roofs. A 2-storeys T-plan house facing N, with crosswing at W, large central chimney with cruciform shaft, at junction of wings, lobby-entry at front and staircase in rear angle. Small projection for lobby to line with front of wing. Rear lateral internal chimney and stop-chamfered axial beam in E room suggests this was the originally unheated parlour. W wing a service wing, W bay c1800, lean-to dairy extension. Upper floor of W wing has close-studding exposed and tension bracing. N front has 3 windows to each floor and small upper window beside porch. Heavy flush 3-light and 4-light wooden casement windows under segmental arches. Heavy frame to door under similar arch. Triangle of N gable of crosswing weatherboarded, and its ground floor in early C17 brickwork possibly representing the underbuilding of a jetty c1600. Separate open fireplace and oven inserted in crosswing with addition of W bay. Good pilastered C18 fire surround in hall and early C18 corner cupboard half glazed with hemicyle top. C17 moulded plank doors. Stair trap still in use giving access to upper floor of crosswing. (RCHM Typescript).
