5/194 Stable Block at - Amersfort to North of house

GV II

Stable block, now flats. 1911 by Ernest Willmott for W.S. Cohen, to complement the main house q.v. '1911' in openwork on windvane. Narrow plum brick in English garden wall bond with red brick dressings and tile arches, red tile-hanging to 1st floor, and tall hipped red tile roofs. A separate L-shaped group with single-storey N stable range facing S and 2-storeys E coachhouse range pierced by a round arched carriageway. Lower stable range has gablet to hipped roof, square lantern with pidgeon holes at 2 levels and vane on tiled roof. Most of S side set back to shelter stable doors and provide a covered way from taller block. Dutch gable on chimney on W side of taller block, with 2-light round-headed window and circular window below. Projecting flat moulded canopy to 3 coachhouse doors of oak planks. (Ernest Willmott RIBA, English House Design Batford, London (1911) plates 8 and 9).
