Details
NEW ROAD 1. 909 Nos 1 & 3 SO 9570 NE 2/53 28.4.52. II 2. This building (formerly the "Old Hop Pole Inn") was originally situated in High Street. It was demolished circa 1863 to make room for the entrance of New Road and re-erected on its present site. The existing structure is a 2 storey plus attic building dates "1572 WB" and appears to be 1 storey less than the original inn. The greater part of the upper floors have been reconstructed from the original geometrical timber framing with central jettied gable head to attic and a smaller jettied gable head on each side having (probably) original carved barge boards. The lower floor is of C19 work and consists of elaborate "Gothic" porch with heraldic shields and roof of scalloped shingles with windows on each side of "Gothic" wood tracery. There is a further facsimile gabled bay to right hand side. C19 chimneys and machine tile roof.
