GV II*
House and adjoining garden walls. Late C17 on older site with c1770 and c1930 alterations and additions. Dressed coursed sandstone rubble with sandstone ashlar additions; plain tiled roofs with gable-end parapets; massive brick stacks with ashlar caps. H-plan. Part two storeys and attic with cellar, part three storeys and attic. North front elevation: most windows have moulded keyblocks; central part has irregular fenestration; 12-pane sash windows, one on ground floor, one at landing level and two on first floor; also first floor 9-pane sash. All are later insertions as is the central entrance which has a Palladian motif of open pediment on two pairs of pilasters, each pair enclosing a 6-pane window, a central round-headed archway; door has six raised and fielded panels and a barred segmental fanlight. Left gable end has two ground floor cross-casements; two first floor 12-pane sashes and two second floor 2-light casements. Right gable end has two 12-pane sashes on ground and first floor. Both gable ends have moulded strings at attic level and oval windows in the gable apex. Interior: retains C17 main roof structure. Large sandstone fireplace. Room to front right of ground floor has complete Georgian interior with ornate gilded plasterwork of foliated design, panelled walls and decorative chimneypiece. c1930 service wings adjoin to left side. A sandstone wall of C17 adjoins to rear left and runs south for about 30 yards, about 10 feet high and has archway adjacent to house. At the south end is a three-yard west return in C17 brick. Also C17 brick wall with sandstone coping adjoining house to front right corner. It runs west for about 24 yards before returning south for 35 yards. It is mainly about 15 feet high but halfway along the south return is a wrought iron gate and beyond this gate it lowers to a height of about 10 feet. (BoE, p 78).
