CRANBROOK BAKER'S CROSS, (WEST TQ 7735 NE SIDE)
12/18 Rammells House - GV II
House, now school boarding house for Cranbrook School. Later C16 or early C17 with front block added in 1882-83 by Ernest Newton and W W Nere, extended circa 1939. Front block: Red brick, over ground floor rendered between red brick pilaster-strips. Moulded wooden eaves cornice to plain tiled roof with very tall slightly projecting end stacks and similar stack off-centre to right. Three storeys; 2 window front, wooden casements to left, with wide 3-storey octagonal bay to right. Continuous windows round all sides with lattice glazing over glazing bar casements on both first and second floors. Deep pentice tiled hood over ground floor with similar octagonal bay to left as well as that to right, flanking central arched doorway with side-lights, half-glazed door and low arched transom light. Rear: Half-hipped 2½-storey timber-framed and weather-boarded wing to rear, the original later C16 or early C17 house. Interior: Stair survives, 2 flight return with turned bulbous balusters. Various semi-inglenook and decorated fire surrounds.
