GV II

Cow house, cow shelter and stables, forming north and east (entry) sides of farmyard complex. "A D 1866" in trefoiled tablet on central south-facing gable. Brick, tiled roofs with small gabled louvred vents at regular intervals along ridge. L-plan with cow house/cow shelter part aligned roughly east/west from its junction with hop kilns, hop rooms, cow shelter, cart shed and barn range (qv) to the west and stable part returning southwards to form one side of main entrance from road to farmyard. One storey. South elevation: advanced central gabled front with thermal window beneath tablet and central ledged door; to the left three openings to cow house with a ledged door to either side of the middle opening; to the right are five arched openings with 4-centred heads supported on brick piers forming the front of cow shelter. West elevation of stables return wing attached to cow shelter has a slatted opening to right of centre with three doors, two to the left of the opening and one to right; south gable of stables has thermal window to side of farmyard entrance. North elevation of east/west range has three gables one in the centre and one at each end, that to the right being the end of the hop kiln, hop room, cow shelter, cart shed and barn range (qv). Interior: trusses are mainly queen posts carrying angle struts to principals; cow house has feeding passage along rear wall with parallel free-standing continuous racks and troughs to the front of it; in the rear of the central gabled part is a sheep dip about four feet deep, reputed to be one of the first in Herefordshire to be designed into a farm building. Part of a model farmstead complex, adjoining Brook Farmhouse (qv), reputedly built by the Eastnor Estate. Included for group value as a complete example.
