5/17 Freetown Farmhouse (Formerly listed as 18.11.52 Freetown)

GV II

Farmhouse. C17, altered C18, remodelled mid-C19, further C20 alterations. Timber-framed with part wattle-and-daub and part painted brick infill, brick refacing and remodelling to south front, sandstone plinth and stacks, tiled roofs. Irregular plan: Z-plan obscured by later mid-C19 additions. Present entrance in remodelled south front of west wing with end stacks, further large external stack to north gable end of north wing. Two storeys, attics and cellar. South front: three irregularly spaced windows, glazing bar sashes with cambered brick heads forward projecting square-plan bay windows, three plain sash windows to left and two to right of projecting wooden porch with plain columns and cornice, and 4-panelled door. Framing revealed to rear and west gable end of west wing shows that the roof was probably heightened possibly during C18, generally five or six panels from sill to wall-plate with V-struts in gable. The large brick external stack has two unusual detached circular plan shafts,. House within former moated site.
