SO 33 SE BACTON CP - 5/10 Barn about 70 yards east of Paradise -
GV II
Barn. Possibly mid-C18 extended in later C19. Rubble base and south gable wall, timber-frame, weatherboards, woven panels, stone slate roof. Five bays, catslide extension to west, central opposed entrances, the larger to the east raised under a raking top. Frame: 2 panels high from deep rubble base to wall-plate, woven panels of oak laths fill upper range of panels on west side of north bay. The end bays appear to be C19 extensions in smaller scantling. Interior: central bays have ties with raking struts; outer bays collars supported by vertical posts, tension braces to corner posts The catslide extension is constructed from rubble and the south gable end has a pitching-hole for what was an upper storey to the southernmost bay. From details of posts and rails it seems that the building was designed witha continuous range of woven top panels except on the unframed south end. Forms group with Paradise (qv).
