3/11 Group of 3 chest tombs about 9 yards south east of the chancel of the Church of St Mary Magdalene

GV II

Group of 3 chest tombs. c1830; the tomb south of the group is a late C19 copy. Sandstone ashlar. Greek-revival in style. The two oldest tombs have moulded plinths and reeded corner pilaster strips with rosettes above; the middle tomb also has reeded pilaster strips at the centre of its north and south sides; ridged capping and antefixae; shaped inscription panels have corner rosettes and inscriptions of varied lettering. The later tomb is a simplified version; reeded pilaster strips to just north and south faces; slightly ridged capping with antefixae and rectangular inscription panels. The inscriptions on the north tomb are illegible. The middle tomb has one legible panel to Elizabeth Birch, died 1823. The south tomb has one panel to Fanny Davies, died 1807, and Benjamin Davies, died 1871, and an end panel to Mary Smith, died 1902.
