5/31 Upper Howsen Farmhouse

II

Farmhouse. C17 or earlier, early C18 and later alterations. Timber-framed, refaced in brick, tiled roofs, large external brick rear stack with rebuilt single shaft; also external brick stack to right side elevation. H-shape plan of hall and 2 cross-wings. Central range of 3 framed bays, 3 bay cross- wing and 2-bay service wing. Two storeys with dentilled eaves cornice to central range and 3-course band between main floors of solar wing. Front elevation: Central range has a 4-light casement with cambered head, 2 first floor 3-light casements and a planked door with a cambered head adjacent to cross-wing. Cross- wing gable end has a glazing bar sash with cambered head and a blocked similar- sized window at ground floor level, 2 first floor cross casements and an attic light; there is a C20 multi-paned door to the right of the blocked window. Ser- vice wing gable end has a 11-light casement with cambered head flanked by 2 small square casements, and a first floor casement with cambered head. The interior was not inspected. A C19 outshut adjoins the central range and service wing to rear.
