Details
EARDISLEY CP off A 411 (west side) SO 35 SW 3/39 Great Quebb Farmhouse and adjoining outbuilding 19.8.53 and garden wall (formerly listed as Great Quebb) GV II Farmhouse, now divided into two houses, with adjoining outbuilding. Circa 1400 origins, extended or part rebuilt late C16 with further C17, mid-C19 and mid-C20 alterations. Timber-framed on rubble base, roughcast with slate roof and two brick stacks to north-west side of main ridge. Four framed bays (including passage bay) aligned north-east/south-west; intersecting cross-wing probably of two framed bays at south-west end having an external rubble chimney with brick stack in its south-east angle. Two storeys. Framing: visible at south-west end. Cross-wing has two rows of exposed panelling at ground floor level. First floor is jettied to south-west and at south-east end on shaped brackets with a chamfered bressummer. North-west front elevation: main range has three ground floor and four first floor 3- light casements. Entrance in second bay has a gabled canopy on console brackets and a C17 door with strap hinges. Cross-wing gable end to right has a ground floor square light and a first floor 2-light casement with a transom light. Other entrance in side elevation of cross-wing has a C20 -door. Lean-to addition at rear left of main range and on south-west side of cross-wing. Interior: main range has remains of at least one cruck truss and a pair of archways with four-centred heads on both floors. C17 dog-leg staircase with pierced splat balusters, moulded handrail and square newels with turned finials. Cross-wing has a ground floor room lined with C17 panel- ling and an early C18 fireplace with panelled overmantel. Outbuilding: adjoins north-east end. Timber-framed and weatherboarded on rubble base with stone tiled roof laid in diminishing courses. Two framed bays. Two levels. North-west elevation has a 6-pane window, a gabled dormer with a loft open- ing, a large archway and a doorway. Garden wall adjoins south-west end. Rubble. About 12 feet high, runs south-west for about 10 yards and returns south-east for about 40 yards. On south-east side of section adjoining Great Quebb Farmhouse are 12 square bee-boles arranged in two tiers. (RCHM, III, p 55, item 33; Alcock, NW: CBA Cruck Catalogue, 1981).
