The White House
II
House, formerly divided into two tenements. C17 with mid-C19 and mid-C20
alterations. Timber-framed with painted brick infill on rubble base, partly
rendered with stone-tiled roof laid in diminishing courses and rubble ridge
stack. L-plan; main range of two framed bays aligned east/west with large
chimney at east end, and also external brick chimney at west end. Cross-
wing also of two framed bays and adjoins east end. Single storey and attic
with dormers. Framing: three rows of square panels from sill to wall-plate,
short straight upper corner braces, cross-wing has collar and tie-beam truss
with two struts and V-strut above collar at south end. South front elevation:
main part has three ground floor 2-light casements (two with plank weatherings)
and two gabled dormers with 2-light casements. One of the ground floor windows
is situated within a C20 lean-to half-glazed porch which adjoins the easternmost
bay. The main entrance within the porch has a ledged and battened door. The
cross-wing gable end has a ground floor 2-light casement and a rectangular
light and above is an attic light; all windows have plank weatherings. Attic
lights at west gable end. (RCHM, III, p 54, item 22).
