GV II* 1 9 1 House. Dated 0 (ie 1910) on leadwork separating frist and second storey right hand bay windows to garden front. By Ernest Newton for Julia Holland. Arts and Crafts Style. Roughcast, Westmorland slate roofs, end stacks support diagonally set detached shafts. The symmetrical (garden) front faces roughly west, cross-wings to north and south of this project further west, whilst to the north of the north cross-wing is a north-south oriented service wing. 2 storeys over cellars, main front is of 5 windows A B C B A, the As corresponding to the cross-wings; metal casements and top-vents (of 6 to 15 panes set in cames) attached to wooden surrounds; the 2 projecting wings each have 5 sided polygonal bays running through both storeys, the windows at each level being separated by polygonal lead panels containing garlands of coloured oak, thistle and shamrock flanked by vertical running oak leaves at the 4 angles of each polygon. Projecting gables have decorative bargeboards and pendants. Central entrance under semi-circular plan balustraded porch supported by 4 Ionic columns and through glazed French casements; entrance front to east, also has central entrance under a 2 storey central projecting porch with broken curved pediment supported by paired cushion-shaped corbels at each side, through a fine beaded oak door. Interior: spine corridor along front of main range; open well oak staircase to-north of entrance axis has facetted knobs to newel-tops, distorted but elegant grid-pattern between hand rails and string and an original light fitting above the well. Room to south of entrance contains fireplace with signs of the zodiac in the over- mantel; sitting room in south west projection has tiled marbled mirrored fireplace and all other fireplaces to principal rooms are complete. The bathroom has original full-height tiling, water-closet; cast iron bath on marble slab and heated towel-rail. Service wing: front facing loggia, combined maids' bathroom and laundry room with Columbian pine fittings, kitchen. Chubb safe. Skirting boards to main ground floor rooms and windows are painted softwood whereas paradoxically the ceilings have oak carving. Semi-circular headed arches to main corridor with dying mouldings to extradoses. The house contains only 4 principal bedrooms, 2 dressing rooms and 3 servants' bedrooms. (The entry in "The Buildings of England" is erroneously under West Malvern, Worcestershire).
