3/27 Gateway and curtain wall
GV II
Gateway and curtain wall. Late C18. Coursed rubble. Wall with central entrance aligned north/south, returning to east at north end with quadrant bastion in corner, this stretch of wall terminated by a square tower. South end returns to south-east and is terminated by a diamond-plan tower. Main wall is crenellated with two-centred arch of two chamfered orders to entrance flanked by two loops to each side. Quadrant and return wall to right have a plain parapet. The tower has a corbelled crenellated parapet and a cross-loop below. The battered plinth has a roll moulding. Other tower similarly detailed. Croft Castle is a property in the care of the National Trust. (BoE, p 109; National Trust Guidebook 1986, pp 13, 38).
