Details
OVERBURY CP - SO 9437 - 9537 9/119 Coach-house about 20 yards north of Overbury Court GV II
Coach-house, now offices. Early C18 with c1900 alterations probably by Richard Norman Shaw. Coursed limestone rubble with ashlar dressings and hipped Welsh slate roof with swept eaves. Single storey and attic with dormers, moulded plinth and eaves cornice. 2:1:2 bays with large pilasters between outer bays; the central bay breaks forward and is gabled. Outer bays have windows with dropped keyblocks and tall cross-casements with leaded lights. Above each pair of bays is a hipped-roofed dormer of c1900 with a 3-light leaded casement. The central bay has an attic window with a dropped keyblock and a cross-casement; beneath it is the main entrance which has a rusticated surround, a stepped and rusticated lintel with a dropped keyblock, double panelled doors and a plain transom light. At the centre of the roof ridge is a clock tower with a moulded cornice and a large square panel to each side with an egg and dart moulded surround; the east panel contains a clock face. The clock tower is surmounted by an octagonal lantern with round-arched arcaded sides and a domical lead roof with a ball finial and weathervane. The south side of the coach house facing Overbury Court (qv) is also of 2:1:2 bays with cross-casements and dormers but the bays are narrower and there are no pilasters. The central bay has a blind attic window and the door is reached by two flights of four steps with ornate cast iron railings. (BoE, p 233).
