Details

CROWLE CP SCHOOL LANE (north side) SO 95 NW 6/33 The Malt House GV II House. Probably of C16 origin, altered and extended mid-C19 and mid-C20. Part timber-framed with brick infill, brick refacing and replacement walling, brick additions, plain tiled roofs and two brick ridge end stacks to C19 addition. Former hall and cross-wing plan, hall part on west/east axis with cross-wing of two framed bays at east gable end; main part completely rebuilt during C19 and has parallel rear range of C20 date; two storeys. Framing: two rows of square panelling survive below wall-plate level, swept braces in lower corners and collar and tie-beam trusses with two collars, four struts to lower collar and two struts to upper collar. South front elevation: cross- wing gable end at right side has main entrance with half-glazed C20 door and left side-light with cambered head and two attic lights in gable; C19 two- window range to left of wing; ground floor windows have cambered heads and all windows are 3-light casements; central entrance now blocked but retains 6-panelled door and gabled canopy. Interior: roof of wing has intermediate tie-beam truss with raking struts now with section of tie-beam removed.
