Tomb of Francis Benn (d.1847)
Marble obelisk on a square pedestal with moulded base; the inscription, now weathered, is set within a recessed field with clipped corners. The front of the obelisk bears a relief of a lily, the flower of which has been cut off and lies on the ground: this is emblematic of a life cut off at full bloom. Over the flower hovers a butterfly: this is an ancient Greek symbol for the soul, and shows the Platonic concept of the soul's liberation through death from the body. Such symbolism is more usually encountered on internal funerary monuments. Listed for its elegant Neoclassical form and symbolism.
