Details

WICKHAM IRONMILL LANE SO 50 NW 7/3 Ironmaster's House II

House. Of two phases, late C18 and early C19, with C20 renovation and minor extensions. Brick walls in English and Flemish Garden Wall bonds, plinth, 1st floor band to the older part, pilasters to the front, cambered openings. Tile roof, gabled and half-hipped. Two storeys and attic, east front elevation symmetrical of 1.1.1 windows. Casements. 6-panelled door beneath a gabled canopy on brackets. The house adjoins C18 ironworks (of fragmentary remains) which are famous for the work of Henry Cort, who bought the premises c1780. He is noted for his patents of 1783 and 1784, relating to technical innovations in the fining of cast-iron, to produce wrought-iron.
