Details

869/5/345 ST JAMES' LANE 14-JAN-74 1 EDGAR ROAD 1-4

II Terrace of five houses. Early to mid C19.

MATERIALS: Stuccoed brick, with slate roof covering.

EXTERIOR: Two storeys, with basement, hipped roof and overhanging eaves. Multi-pane unhorned sash windows with moulded stucco architraves. 2-panel doors with rectangular light over, within plain architraves. Band between storeys. Nos 1-4 Edgar Road are of 2 bays with blind window above the entrance. Later dormers to Nos. 2 and 4. No 1 James Lane forms the northern return of the terrace and has a symmetrical three-bay facade. The western ground-floor is blind; that to the right is a later canted bay. Bracketed cornice to door. The house occupies an irregular plot which means that it is deeper on the west side, resulting in asymmetrically shaped rooms, and the interior wall behind the blind window is curved in order to compensate for this.

INTERIOR: Not inspected.

REASONS FOR DESIGNATION: Nos. 1 to 4 (consec) Edgar Road and No. 1 St James' Lane are designated for the following principal reason: * A cohesive and well-preserved early-mid C19 stuccoed terrace
