- Cottage)
- II
House, C17 with late-mediaeval core and early C19 alterations. Hall and
service cells of 1 storey with attics, and 2-storey cross-wing to left of
mediaeval origin, much-altered. Timber-framed and plastered, the framing
partly exposed externally. Thatched roof with gabled casement dormers. Central
chimney of red and gault brick. C18 and C19 casements with leaded lights; the
panes have arched glazing bars and stained glass in the Gothick manner. Fish-
scale slated open canopy on slender posts, and C19 panelled entrance door.
Areas of tension-braced studwork and heavy lodged floor joists are visible in
the cross-wing; these may represent C15 work, but there are major alterations
of C17 and later. This site is believed to have been the home of Sir Henry
Barton, Lord Mayor of London 1416 and 1428.
