12/60 The Market Cross 7.5.54 II

Market cross, C15. Hexagonal plan. Open, single-storey. Timber-framed. Leaded pyramid roof; a lead sheet has the date 1681 and initials R.C. and W.M. impressed upon it. Central wooden spike finial with iron weathervane. Each of 6 rib-moulded corner posts has hewn moulded pilasters supporting arch-bracing on 4 sides. The arch-bracing supports a tie-beam spanning between each post. Further tie-beams radiate from the centre of the structure, cantilevered over the post at each corner. A central pillar on the main tie-beam supports the roof apex, where principal rafters from each corner converge. At the eaves is a moulded fascia, with a moulded drop-finial at each corner, arch-braced up to the fascia. Apart from some replacement roof-members, the structure is weathered but original. It is a Scheduled Ancient Monument.
