Details
BRENT ELEIGH HALL ROAD 1. 5377 Church of St Mary the Virgin TL 94 NW 36/173 23.1 .58 I 2. An early C14 stone and flint building standing on high ground to the north of the village near to Brent Eleigh Hall. It is an outstanding example of a manorial church;with many original features; which has escaped C19 restoration. There is a fine early C14 south door carved with reticulated blank tracery. The interior has a complete set of high box pews, some Jacobean but mostly C18. The manorial pew, probably a former chapel, is enclosed by old screens. Th east wall of the chancel has a remarkable mediaeval wall painting of the crucifixion with figures of women. It was probably the original reredos dating from circa 1300. There is also a C14 wall painting of angels and a C16 painting of the harrowing of hell. The font is early C14 with a C17 cover and the pulpit is C17. In the chancel there is a standing wall monument to Edward Colman (d 1739) by Thomas Dunn, the sculptor.
