Details

GROTON 1. 5377 Groton House TL 94 SE 41/342 16.2.76 II 2. A large early C18; red brick building probably incorporating the core of an earlier building. Parts are said to date back to the Restoration period. Considerably enlarged with a north-east wing. Roof slate, hipped with a modillion moulded eaves cornice and flat headed dormers with slated cheeks. Two storeys and attics. The windows are double-hung sashes with glazing bars and cased frames in shallow reveals with gauged brick flat arches. The main south-west front has 1:3:1 window range and the centre part, of 3 window range, breaks forward slightly. A central doorway has a stone doorcase with pediment on console brackets. Four dormers. The north-west front has 5 window range and a central French window under a C19 verandah porch with wide eaves. Three dormers. A raised brick band extends across the fronts between the storeys. The south-east front has 2 large 2-storeyed splayed bays with 3 window range and 4 window range between the bays. Seven dormers. There are a number of tall chimney stacks with cornices. The interior has a sitting room with neo-classical decoration, massive ceiling beams in the sitting room and hall and a good pine staircase with open string and twisted balusters.
