5/116 The Old Crown - - II

House, latterly a public house and 3 dwellings. Early C16, part rebuilt and extended c.1600, altered C19 and C20. Timber frame, plastered with restored combed scrolled pargetting in panels. Steeply pitched pantiled roofs. Originally 4 bays with a small 2 bay open hall and 2 storeyed lower bays; hall bays largely rebuilt, stack and parlour added to left. 2 storeys. Entrance into upper bay of hall in a C20 brick gabled porch, 2 and 3-light glazing bar casements, doors into parlour and service ends replaced with C20 windows. Axial ridge stack to left of centre between hall and parlour, rebuilt cap. Slightly higher roof to centre defines three 2-bay sections, left end half hipped with a gablet. Lean-to outshuts on both ends. To rear a boarded door in cross passage position, a rebuilt external stack on service end. Interior: cross passage doorways with a 4-centred arched doorhead to front, chamfered surrounds to 2 service doorways, close studding with mid-rails, in hall a stop chamfered axial binding beam and fireplace bressumer, traces of a large window to rear, 4-light diamond mullioned window openings to front, a chamfered cross axial binding beam in lower bays, parlour has a chamfered 4-centred arched brick fireplace, frame concealed. Newel stair in front of stack. First floor solar end wall early window opening cuts through tie beam, arched braces from principals to raised tie beam for open truss to centre of solar, queen post roof to 2 early bays with arched braces to plates/purlins, open truss has a collar clasping plates/purlins, 2 pairs of rafters nearest former open hall are smoke blackened. Hall bays have later open truss tie beam cut, a straight arched brace to tie beam at upper end, chamfered principals and cambered collars clasping purlins, arched windbraces. Parlour chamber close studding with a tension brace in end wall, reroofed.
