4/70 Elms Farmhouse -

-- II

Farmhouse. Mid C16 parlour block; remainder has medieval core, largely rebuilt in mid C17. Timber framed and plastered, part of the facade faced in colourwashed brick Roof plaintiled at front and pantiled at rear. 2 storeys and attic. 3-cell form. 4 windows, C18-C19 casements without glazing bars. C19 4-panel door, the upper 2 panels glazed with diamond-leaded panes. Internal stack, the shaft largely original. Victorianised interior with most of ground floor structure concealed. Hall bridging beam had massive solid arched braces to the wallposts, one of which survives in altered form: this may be the remains of a medieval raised-aisle truss. Over the hall fireplace is a lintol with mutilated embattled decoration. Chamfered parlour joists. Some plain C17 studding in rear wall at first floor level. Queen-post roof over parlour; staggered butt purlins over hall. Remains of medieval moat.
