DEBENHAM CHANCERY LANE (east side) TM 16 SE 6/55 No.16 (River Cottage) & - No.18 GV II

Originally one house, now 2. First half of C17 with mid C19 facade. Timber framed and rendered, the facade lined to imitate ashlar. Slated roof. 3-cell form. 2 storeys and attic. A-range of 3 small-paned sash windows. Doorway in cross-entry position: C19 6-panel door (upper 2 panels glazed), open porch with entablature, on slender tapering timber columns. Internal stack with plain axial shaft. Later stack against left gable end. Doorway to No.16 in right gable end: C19 6-panel door with open timber porch on square posts. 1 1/2- storey pantiled wing to rear: 2 sash windows with glazing bars facing Chancery Lane; internal stack. Interior. Most of structure is concealed. No.16 under renovation at time of survey (July 1987): some widely-spaced first floor studding, corner posts with deep jowls. Newel stairs. Rear addition to No.16 (now within later lean-to) has window with C17 diamond-leaded glass. Rear wall of No.16 has some original panels of stippled plasterwork preserved within roof of lean-to; some more elaborate C17 pargetted designs are said to be concealed at rear of No.18. Roof pitch altered C19 although original structure probably intact.
