Details
SOMERLEYTON SOMERLEYTON PARK TM 49 NE 4/54 Aviary GV II Aviary. Circa 1846 by John Thomas for Sir Morton Peto. Restored c.1984-5. The north section is a timber framed octagon with domed leaded roof surmounted by an octagonal turret with swept roof (finial missing at time of survey). Overhanging eaves supported on wooden brackets at the angles; above are pierced pinnacles with raised fretwork between. To the south a simple lean-to section in 3 compartments: behind are boarded partitions with ogee-headed voids. The aviary abuts the north west corner of the stable court which it was designed to screen. The surrounding park and gardens are included in the HBMC County Register of Gardens at Grade II*.
