School chapel. 1927 by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott. Bargate rubblestone brought to
course with ashlar dressings; plain tile roof. ll-bay nave and chancel in one
with eastern apse. In modified Gothic style with Arts and Crafts detail. Tall
building, the apparent height increased by having 5 very narrow gabled window
bays to each side holding tall single lancets and alternating with wide bays,
blank except for low square-headed windows at ground level, below offset, and
balustraded balconies near the top leading to lights in the splayed flanks of
the window-bay gables. Four octagonal corner turrets. One-storey porch wings
at each corner have good carved detail to doorways. In eastern apse, grouped
lancets below a large rose window. At west end, three tall lancets in a large
round-arched recess with door below. High-pitched roof with rounded hip over
apse. Interior: large aisleless open space, the walls smooth-rendered and with
ashlar dressings. Oak wainscoting at lower level with pointed-arched panels and
arcaded canopy. Elaborate carved oak organ case in centre at either side.
Raised apse with carved stone reredos pierced for light from stained glass
window. Raised west end bay with side screens, furnished as memorial chapel for
the two world wars. Three doorways at west end, carved and moulded. Roof
barrel-vaulted having flat ribs with hollow chamfers and roll-moulded arrises.
A rich building of inspired design and meticulous craftsmanship both inside and
out.
