II*
Open truss post mill. Fabric dates from C17, possible c1680 with C18 frame to the
superstructure, with alterations of c1880 and post 1970 renovations. It is thought
that this windmill was moved from another site as it is not shown in maps earlier
than 1840. This may have been Kilndown in Kent where a similar windmill disappeared
some time between 1710 and 1760. The grandson of the original miller at Nutley,
Henry Setford, who was there in 1836, reported that Nutley Mill had been moved from
Crowborough to its present site by his Grandfather. Original C17 post, square with
5 inch chamfers, remains but the cross tress and quarter bars were replaced c1970
and the tailpole dates from c1880. The side of the steps is at least C19 in date,
but the treads were renewed c1970. The weatherboarding to the superstructure was
renewed after 1970. The windshaft dates from 1880 but the sails had to be renewed
c1970 and at the time of survey showed 2 of the earlier type of 'common' sails and
2 of the c1880 shutter sails for demonstration purposes.
Internally the framing of the superstructure appears C18 in origin as the original
corner post is jowled with a typical curved profile and the frame has chamfered
diagonal braces. Most of the rest of the wall frame has been renewed after 1970 to
an identical pattern in oak but the curved rafters with no ridgepiece appear C18.
The floorboards have been renewed but the floor joists underneath the structure
appear original. The sack hoist is original and could be C17. One of the brake
wheels is very old and could be C17 with C18 alterations the other is possible C18.
There are a pair of Peak millstones, the rest are French burrs. This is the only
working open truss post mill in the country at time of survey. Only 4 other examples
of the type survive, Bourn Mill, Great Gransdon and Great Chishill in Cambridgeshire
and Chillenden Mill in Kent.
