10/109 Banqueting house about 500 metres east and1.2.50 300 metres south of Gibside.

Banqueting house. 1751 by Daniel Garrett for George Bowes. Restored 1980 by Charlewood, Curry ,Wilson and Atkinson. Sandstone ashlar; concealed roof. Gothick style. Large room with rear apse facing vista and projecting wings. One storey, 3 by 3 bays. Entrance front: central stepped arcaded 3-bay loggia on octagonal columns. Niches in rear wall; 6-panel doors,with deep reeded reveals, in inner returns of wings. Tall pointed parapet holds quatrefoil and cross ornament; wings have battlemented parapets. Garden front: 5 curved steps to central sash with opening panels below: flanking sashes in apse, one sash at either side, all with glazing bars. Tall pierced screen wall and 3 stepped, crocketed, ornamented gables over the apse; battlemented side parapets. Cusped ogee surrounds to windows. Similar surrounds to niches on returns. Interior: transverse main hall with mid-side apses, the inner holding fireplace and flanking niches, ogee- headed with moulded plasterwork. Similar heads to mirrors above cable- moulded dado rail. Coved ceiling and patterned plaster frieze. COUNTRY LIFE 26 SEPTEMBER 1974.
