ACKWORTH PONTEFRACT ROAD SE41NW (east side) High Ackworth 2/17 Guide post on traffic 25.3.1968 island at junction with Long Lane - II

Guide post. Dated 1827 at top of west side. Sandstone (part rendered). Octagonal in section, and approx. 3 metres high; base of 2 chamfered blocks; tapered column, large triangular cap with ball finial surmounted by small cup-shaped iron bracket with a spur. Top of west side of column inscribed "1827". Painted lettering and finger pointers on side of cap:-

Pontefract 2½ Barnsley 10 (west side) Darrington 3 York 29 (north-east side) Sheffield 13 East Hardwick 2½ (south-east side)
