ST2937 RUSSELL PLACE 736-1/5/152 (East side (off)) 16/12/74 Nos.1 AND 2 Dock Cottages

GV II

Two semi-detached cottages. Early C19, enlarged later C19. Flemish-bond brick, shallow-pitched slate roofs, hipped to the central block with bracketed eaves to the 2-storey forward-facing gabled wings, the rear extensions of these wings have hipped roofs. Brick stacks to the ridges of wings and party wall. H-shaped plan. 2 storeys; symmetrical 4-window range (each cottage is 2-window range). Flat gauged brick arches to C20 windows. The set-back main block has a window at eaves level to each cottage above a continuous slate-roofed verandah over C20 doors; larger windows to the forward-facing outer wings, those to ground floor are in cambered-arched recesses with stone keystones. The right return of No.1 to right has 2 similar but wider recesses on a rubblestone plinth possibly to a former building. The wings are of old Bridgwater brick to ground floor and Flettons to first floor suggesting an enlargement in the mid C19. INTERIOR: the right-hand cottage has one room to left, cupboard stairs and a tongued-and-grooved screen wall to landing. 2 rooms to right have fireplaces backing onto a central stack. Included for group value.
