1/7 Farm buildings to west of Horton Grange Farmhouse
G.V. II
Planned farm buildings. Circa 1858, and dovecot dated 1863 on lintel, for Sir Matthew White Ridley. Coursed squared sandstone with ashlar quoins and dressings; Welsh slate roofs with stone gable copings. Courtyard with granaries and central corn drier on north; hemmels at sides in front of storage sheds; enclosed by low south range with central square dovecot; 2 detached turnip houses in yard. One storey, higher on north range, with 3-storey south range tower. 5-bay north range, 3-bay wings; south range of 7 bays; turnip houses one- storey, one-bay. In north range a central pediment with blind roundel over sliding door and 2 square lights with glazing bars. Elliptical-headed arches on slightly- chamfered stone piers flanking central door and to inner returns of wings. In south range, dovecot has outside stone steps to central first floor boarded door; similar door at ground floor right; outer elevation has hit-and-miss windows on 2 floors and roundel with glazing bars on third; weathervane finial to pyramidal roof. Low ranges flanking dovecot have timber lintels to 3 boarded doors on elevation facing field. Interior of farm buildings shows scissor-trussed roofs. Historical note; Kelly's directory for 1858 describes the house and farm buildings of the model farm as the most complete and extensive in Northumberland.
