GV II

House, now farmhouse. Early/mid C16 (VCH) cross wing on right; late C16/C17 central range and rear wing; mid C19 cross wing on left. Timber framed with jowled posts; right wing has close studding throughout, with brick nogging and infill, and some lath and plaster to side and rear. Central range and rear wing square framed with brick infill. Left wing red brick, with plinth and heavy string course of red and blue bricks; first floor and attic rendered. Old tile roof, bitumen coated; brick, and stone and brick stacks. L-plan, extended to T-plan, with wing to rear and cross wings to front. 2 storeys; left wing 2 storeys and attic; 3-window range. Entrance on left of central range has C19 plank door under segmental brick arch, and simple open brick porch with tile roof. C19 painted latticed casements. Ridge stack. Left wing has heavy chamfered stone mullioned windows with corbelled sills, 3-light on first floor and 2-light to attic; ground floor without windows. First floor and attic have pargetting of stylised stalks and leaves throughout. Half-hipped roof. Return side of right wing has broad stone stack with brick shaft and leaded latticed casements. Left wing return side has external stack with 2 diagonally-set square shafts. 2 ground level windows under brick segmental arches light dairy. Stone mullioned 3-light window on first floor; 2-light stone mullion attic window to rear. Rear wing has C19 plank door. C19 and C20 casements. Gable end has massive crow-stepped external brick stack. Interior: Exposed framing throughout. Room in C16 cross wing has fireplace with chamfered beam. Hall has former open fireplace with wood overmantel of decayed C15 traceried carving, and C17 panelling above; both probably brought in from elsewhere. 2-panelled door with L-hinges beside fireplace. Both rooms have ogee stop-chamfered ceiling beams. Kitchen has open fireplace, now divided, with bread oven. First floor has jowled post. Plank, 2-panelled and Cl7 six-panelled doors. Winder stairs. Dairy retains slate slabs etc. Situated at rear left corner is a detached outbuilding (q.v.). (V.C.H.: Warwickshire: Vol.III, p.140; Buildings of England: Warwickshire, p.368).
