4/95 Lock No 18 (Fairfield Top Lock)
GV II
Lock. Between 1794 and 1797 but increased to a double lock in 1820s due to increased traffic. Benjamin Outram engineer. Earlier lock (south) - hammer-dressed stone, later lock-brick with stone dressings. The later lock no longer has gates and functions as an overflow. The earlier lock has double-leaf head and tail gates (replaced in 1970s along with hydraulic paddle gear). The walls have been repaired using brick bands and boatman's steps have been recessed into the wall. The island has wide steps at the tail end. Included for group value.
