Former railway bridge over River Irwell. 1881. Built for Lancashire and Yorkshire
Railway by Andrew Handyside and Co of Derby. Five cast-iron arches on tall brick
pillars, capped with stone. Brick abutments. Stone bases and cutwaters to two pillars
in river bed. Six ribs of arches are spaced to carry the rails directly. Wooden
decking. An unusually late example of cast iron railway bridge.
