TQ 2783 NW CITY OF WESTMINSTER CHARLBERT STREET, NW8 13/7 15.4.86 OSLO COURT

II G.V.

Block of flats. 1937-38 by Robert Atkinson. Reinforced concrete and brick infill and cladding; flat terrace roof. Long L-plan International Modern block, planned in depth on narrow site between Charlbert and Culworth Streets with narrow 2-bay end to Prince Albert Road and Regent's Park to south. Orientation and depth of site govern ingenious planning with side elevations staggered at angle such that each flat has private theatre box-like balcony to south, off the return of its main window, benefitting from the view, at the same time functionally expressing the cantilevered structure with the concrete exposed as lintel and stepped balcony base and the cladding role of the brickwork subtly indicated by the soldier course on the cantilever. 7 storeys. 9- and 7-bay sides. Main entrance in splayed re-entrant angle, to Charlbert Street wing with fully glazed lift-stair tower finished off with cantilevered canopy above roof terrace; secondary entrances in 2nd and 3rd bays on Culworth and Charlbert Streets respectively (diagonally linked internally) with concrete oculi above lighting stairs. Crittal metal casements, bent around corner to Prince Albert Road end.
