House pair. Early-mid C18, built for the Engelhart family, a Hanoverian family. Extended early C19 and C20 conservatory to no 358.
EXTERIOR: Original part of stock brick with stuccoed ground floor. Tiled double pitched roof with brick chimneystacks. Three storeys and basement: six windows. Parapet with stone coping. Second floor has six-pane sashes with horns and cambered heads. First floor has twelve-pane sashes with cambered head linings. Band between ground and first floor with paterae with putto head. Ground floor has twelve-pane sashes and shutters. No 356 has an early C19 stock brick extension of two storeys with sashes without glazing bars and round-headed doorcase to right hand side. No 358 has a two storey lean-to stuccoed extension with incised lines to imitate masonry and two storey canted bay to side with twelve-pane sashes. Doorcase in side elevation now reached through C20 conservatory with round-headed arches and C20 paintings by Charles Mozley. Rear part of no 358 is stuccoed with some multi-pane sashes.
INTERIOR: No 356 has a staircase with stick balusters and a first floor mid C18 reception room plastered ceiling with agricultural motifs by Francis Engelhardt. No 358 Dining Room has 1750s cornice with sexaglyphs and paterae, bolection-moulded fireplace, dado rail and C20 marbling by Charles Mozley. Stick baluster dogleg staircase with column newels and door embellished by Mozley. First floor has reception room Engelhardt ceiling with circular centre decoration with corner urns and putti and cornice of urns and anthemion motifs. Fireplace painted by Charles Mozley with putti and swags. Wide doorcase with pilasters leads to annexe with similar ceiling. First floor has a bedroom with original fireplace and bathroom covered in nude murals by Charles Mozley in a Classical style. Second floor has an original panelled screen to the top of the stairs, two-panelled doors, original fireplace with Mozley painting of urn, floral swags and fruit. Further Mozley features include murals after Piero della Francesca in the Conservatory and green arches to the Garden Room. Two round-headed arches to cellar.
HISTORY: The Engelhardt family came from Hanover with George I. Francis Engelhardt built the pre-Adam plastered ceilings. Later Thomas Engelhardt, miniaturist and Artist also lived here and Bower who was a botanist and artist. In the C20 John Plant ARCA and Charles Mozley ARCA lived here.
