frame with painted infill clad in brownish brick of various bonds; plain tile
roof; brick chimneys. 2 storeys. Main range, probably late C16 replacing an
earlier open hall, of 3 bays with through passage between right-hand bays. On
its left, projecting slightly, is C15, floored, gabled, solar cross-wing,
possibly originally jettied at front, and 2 bays deep (although in line with
main range at rear). To rear of main range on right is 2-bay wing. Windows are
mostly diamond-leaded iron casements with wood frames; late C20 doors; openings
at front have segmental header brick arches. Entrance elevations gabled porches
to board doors, on left of cross-wing and to centre of main range, the latter
doorway with chamfered wood frame. Wing has 2-light window to right, 3-light
window above, imported 1790 Sun Insurance fire plaque, and old cusped barge-
boards. Main range has 2-light windows, those on first floor set below eaves;
roof half-hipped on right; multiple-flue stack at left end, forward of ridge,
and external stack at right end. Rear: right wing has C20 door and side
lights; a small window on left at mid-floor level with segmental brick arch; and
a 2-light window below eaves of hipped roof. Brick pilaster between wing and
main range which has small window to left, larger one to centre, both under
segmental brick arches, and 3 windows above (that on right small). Left wing
has external gable stack with offset top; and to its right return a bricked-up
door with window over on right. Left return (solar wing): central brick pier
with window to right on ground floor, left on first floor, each with late C20
glazing but the latter with 3 large scantling flat-faced wood mullions. Right
return: gable of main range has a 2-light window to each floor on right of
stack, that on first floor with segmental brick arch. Wing has a door, now
window, on left, and a 2-light window to right on each floor, the ground-floor
openings with segmental brick arches. Interior: timber frame exposed, partic-
ularly on first floor which has large-scantling jowelled posts and arched
braces; the main range is built abutting the solar cross-wing, which has: in
ground-floor room, large-scantling unchamfered close-set joists; probably early-
mid C17 brick fireplace with heavily-moulded bressummer, cast-iron fireback with
initials 'CR' (King Charles) and spreading oak tree, and C18 bread oven in side;
on first floor, front wall has shallowly-arched braces and groove in soffit of
wall plate for former window shutter; rear bay has evidence of former mullions
in rear window as remain in window in left wall; central cambered chamfered
tie-beam with stepped-cyma stops supporting plain crown post (in roof) with arch
braces to collar purlin; collared rafters. Main Range: doorhead from former
through-passage rear door. Housebody (on left) has close-set chamfered joists,
mostly with flat stops; chamfered spine-beam; brick inglenoose fireplace with
chamfered cambered bressumer, 2 side recesses, and fire-back with coat of arms.
Right bay has reused rafters as joists. On first floor, top of former solid
wood stair survives, on rear side of chimney; mortices in soffit of wall-plate
of left bay from former diamond-set window mullions; steeply-cambered tie-beams
between bays and also in rear right wing; queen post roof trusses with through
purlins and old rafters.
