COLWICH, Chinese House at Shugborough Hall

(Formerly listed at Grade II*)
Erected by Admiral Anson circa 1747 after his voyage round the world. Rectangular and of one storey. Plastered walls and pyramidal leaded roof with bold eaves. Elaborately fenestrated wood windows. The interior has a fine plaster ceiling now removed to the Hall. There is still in situ an alcove decorated with red lacquer fretwork end gilded pillars. The cornice is decorated in red, blue, gold and white. Recently well restored.
Grade II* shall be amended to read Grade I.
