5/11 Church of St. Michael

G.V. II

Parish church. 1848-50 by S. S. Teulon. Squared ironstone rubble with ashlar dressings, slate roofs with stone coped gables. Nave with western bellcote, south porch and chancel. A slightly projecting and buttressed west wall supports an elaborate bellcote with pointed arch flanked by crocketted finials with gable and cross above. The 2 light west window has cusped ogee heads to the lights. The north wall to the nave has 2 two light windows, as does the north wall of the chancel. East window is of 3 lights with reticulated tracery to the head. Chancel south wall has 2 two light windows and a single chamfered priest's door with pointed head. Nave south wall has 2 two light windows. All windows have cusped ogee heads to the lights, reticulated heads and chamfered hood moulds with floriate labels. The gabled south porch has a single chamfered outer doorway with hood mould and floriate stops, side benches and a moulded and pointed inner doorway with human head label stops. Interior. The chancel arch is double chamfered with octagonal corbels and there is an open chancel screen with cusped arched panels. The sanctuary has an encaustic C19 tiled floor, and the altar rails have ogee panels. Behind the altar are 3 cusped stone recessed quatrefoil panels. All fittings are C19 or C20, apart from the plain C14 octagonal font.
