Details
GLENFIELDS MAIN STREET SK 50 NW 1/29 The Old Tudor Rectory (formerly listed as Rectory) 7.10.57 GV II*
Former rectory, now hotel. South wing, nearest churchyard, is late C15-early C16, with west gable rebuilt in brick mid-late C17, south wall rebuilt in brick C18-C19, and east gable renovated C20. To north of this early wing is a mid-late C17 extension, possibly on site of former hall, and added across north end of this is a large front block of c1730-40 with C19 alterations. Front Block is of brick with roof concealed by parapet. 3 storeys, 5 bays. Slightly asymmet- rical with left bays narrower than right. Band courses at floor levels. Flush 3-pane sashes, square to second floor, all with cambered heads, 2 windows blind and painted. Central early-mid C19 half-glazed door with rectangular fanlight in contemporary reeded wooden surround with pediment hood on scroll brackets. Right end of this block has late C19 2-storey canted bay window. C17 part immediately to rear is of brick with Swithland slate roof. Raised and altered C19, with bay window on west side. C15-C16 wing has close-studded timber-framing exposed in east gable end only. The gable timbers original. Whitewashed plaster infill. West gable rebuilt in brick C17 with moulded brick band course stepped up over window in staircase extension to north. Swithland slate roof. 2 storeys, 2 bays. C20 leaded casements in west gable end. Interior: C15-C16 wing retains close-studded timber-framing in north wall, with slightly arched head of blocked doorway at first floor level. This wing also retains very heavy stop-chamfered floor joints, tie-beam and collar trusses with close studding, and heavy curved wind-braces to purlins. Added to north side of wing is a mid-late C17 staircase with turned wooden balusters and moulded handrail. C17 extension has massive stop-chamfered beam supporting upper storey, and winder stair in line with fire- place. C18 front block has very fine staircase from ground to second floor, with 3 slender turned balusters to each tread, shaped scroll tread ends, and ramped moulded handrail. Some C19 reeded door surrounds.
