CHURCH SQUARE 1. 5303 Old Grammar School SP 7387 1/2 25.7.52. GV
2. 1614. Restored timber framed building with open ground floor formerly used for market functions and with former schoolroom above. Substantial framing, built on a timber arcade of 3 and 2 bays with 10 octagonal posts on stone plinths with curved braces and dragon beams above. 1st floor has plastered infilling with pargetting of 1868 restoration. Oversailing central gables. Roof turret originally of 1697 with bell of the same date replaced in 1868 when rear staircase wing was also added. Quotation from Eph. II painted round whole building on bressumers with record of foundation and endowment by Robert Smythe in 1614.AM. Refs.Seaborne. VCH.
