PACKINGTON MILL STREET SK 31 SE 5/64 Church of the 24.11.65 Holy Rood GV II* Church of C13 and later, with C19 chancel. Ashlar. W tower, nave, aisles and chancel. Tower of 3 stages with bands, battlements, and 4 bell openings with Y tracery and hood moulds. W. window with Y tracery and external steps up to sill. Tower arch possibly C13. Aisles with stepped buttresses, N. parapetted. N. aisle has 3 3-light mullions, 2 with pointed, 1 with curved, arched heads. Hollowed chamfers. N. door. 2-light N.W. window. S. aisle has early C20 S porch, C19 S.E. window with Curvilinear tracery and other windows with hood moulds though tracery removed. C19 chancel with buttresses and plain tile roof, twin lancet E. window, and other windows with Curvilinear tracery. Parapetted nave has 4 bay Perp clerestory with simple 2-light mullions. 4 bay arcade with octagonal piers and double chamfered arches. Final bay of nave and aisle blocked off to form vestries. Simple low pitched truss roof, ceiling plastered. Chancel has boarded 4-sided roof. 6 later C14 bench ends carved with quatrefoils, foliage and head. In S. aisle cusped arched niche and 2 C15/C16 incised slabs. In N. aisle raised fine incised slab to Raphe Leeson, died 1587, and 2 wives. Pevsner.
