Details
THORNTON DALE CHESTNUT AVENUE SE 8383 (north side) 14/91 Grammar School 10.11.53 GV II Grammar School, now meeting hall. 1670, restored and extended C19. Founded under the terms of a Trust Deed executed by Lady Elizabeth Lumley in 1657. Coursed sandstone rubble on chamfered ashlar plinth; raised, chamfered ashlar quoins, ashlar dressings and stacks; graduated stone flag roof. Rectangular on plan, with extensions to rear and rear left. Single storey and attic, gable-end on street. Single 3-light C19 round-headed Perpendicular window beneath stopped hood-mould. Raised attic band, with recessed bell-opening above in gable-end, in rounded arch of two orders beneath a stopped hood-mould. Right return front: C19 recessed board door in rebuilt opening with rebuilt 2-light cinque-foiled window in square- headed opening above. Rebuilt 2-light mullion and transom square-headed windows on either side. Rear: two original chamfered mullion and transom cinquefoiled windows flank extension. Cavetto-moulded eaves cornice.
