SK 30 NE SHACKERSTONE NEWTON LANE (north- east side), Odstone 2/98 Stables and barn approx. 20m north-east of Odstone Hill Farmhouse
GV II
Stables and barn. Late C18. Red brick with slate roof. L-shaped plan; stables aligned roughly north-south with barn to the north-west aligned east-west. East front: Blind except for a few small inserted windows. Central pedimented break with cupola and lower wings terminating in a pair of pedimented gables, the right hand one is the end of the barn, it was altered when the barn was re-roofed in the late C19. Much of this front is obscured by later farmbuildings. West front: 2 storeys with dentilled eaves and central break rising higher than the main building with a pedimented gable containing an open lunette. Below is a segmental-headed door flanked by a pair of circular openings. To the right of this centrepiece are 5 segmental arched doorways punctuated by circular openings at the level of the arches; above each door is a loft opening with boarded hatch. To the left the range has been mutilated to some extent but retains two loft openings. The barn is at right angles to the left. Full height barn doors survive to right of centre; to the left of these and in front of the barn is a single-storey lean-to building with 5 doorways. This was probably an additional stable block.
