Details
KEGWORTH HIGH STREET SK 4826-4926 11/117 No 23 (The Gables) - II - House. Late C18, with C19 extensions to rear wing, and late C19 alterations to front. Red brick on rubble stone base, C20 plain tiles to front pitch, C20 interlocking tiles to rear. Brick gable copings and chimneys renewed C20. L-plan. 2 storeys and attic; 3 bay front. Brick eaves cornice with corbelled dentils, painted white. Late C19 sashes without glazing bars, slightly wider than original openings but retaining original painted heads of gauged brick with keystones. 5 stone steps lead up to central C19 6-panelled top-lit door in moulded wooden frame with panelled frieze. Late C19 gabled timber porch. Attic casements in gable ends. Rear of main block has projection to right with 2 gables, and C19 lean-to to left. Centre gable has tall staircase window. Projecting from right gable is a 2-storey bay of slightly later date than main block, with 3-light horizontal sashes, the upper window transomed and small- paned. Later 2-light window to ground floor left. This bay has C19 extension with 6-light horizontal sash to oversailing upper storey, probably used as work- shop, with door in gable end. Interior of house has C18 staircase with turned balusters, moulded handrail and closed string. C19 doorcases. Kitchen in rear wing has altered fireplace and built-in dresser shelves with slender turned supports.
