II

Large country house built for earl Fitzwilliam as a hunting lodge in 1890 by E. J. May. Picturesque 'Old English' assymmetry. Coursed and squared rubble with ashlar dressings and a red tiled roof. Entrance front of 5 irregular bays, including a 2 storey balustraded porch with strapwork decoration and banded round arched opening, and massive timber doors. Various mullion and transom windows, one a leaded bay. Double gabled projection to right, and gabled dormers to centre. Very tall brick chimney shafts. S.W. front of 5 bays, 1:3:1. To the left a gable with 2 storeyed canted bay window, central range has 3 gabled dormers with finials, and mullion and transom windows, one of which expresses the staircase within, a tall window with a single ogeelight within the mullions. The right hand bay projects as a massive stack with small inglenook lights, 3 brick chimney shafts and a 2 storey bay window on the inner face. Interior has a series of eleborately decorated rooms: the entrance hall has a wood screen arcade to the stairwell, infarmost corner, and ornately wrought staircase. Panelled dining room and drawing room with ornate columned fireplace recess etc.
