8/43 St. Mary's RC Junior School 26.7.1951 (formerly listed as No.90(Golden Hill Schools)) - II
Charity School 1784, altered and enlarged as National School 1816. Stone, stone slate roof with one chimney on the ridge, another at left gable. L-shaped plan of 5 bays with attached master's house at right end. Two storeys; stone quoins, bands at sill level and at 1st floor. Original front entrance in centre of south side now altered as a window, with a rectangular stone tablet above, lettered: In the Year of our Lord 1784 This Charity School was founded endowed and erected by Richard Balshaw Gentleman For Instructing the Children of the Poor only of this Parish, In Reading, Writing and Arithmetic in the English Tongue, And in the principles of the Church of England As by Law Established The Girls to be taught also to Knit Sew and Mark. Left of this a 3-light window rises the full height and has at lst floor level a Venetian form matched by all the other windows: one on each floor to the left, 2 on each floor to the right. To the right, the master's house with projecting gabled centre bay in compatible style and materials; and at the rear of the original school a single storey extension with 2 venetian windows and slate roof.
