Details
WHEELTON BRIERS BROW (off) SD 62 SW 6/205 Miry Fold Cottages - GV II
Pair of weavers cottages, now used as store. Late C18. Coursed sandstone, stone slate roof. Long single-depth 4-bay range, each cottage 2 bays, joined at a central chimney stack serving both, with the outer bays apparently unheated. Two storeys; each has a doorway offset slightly towards the centre of the range, the doorways with plain surrounds, and 2 windows on each floor; the windows between the doors and those at 1st floor of the outer bays, are horizontal rectangular, some being 3-light sliding sashes and others 2-light fixed windows, all with small panes; the windows at ground floor of the outer bays differ: that at the right hand end is 5 lights with flush mullions (2 lights blocked), but that at the left end, formerly similar, has been altered to make coupled vertical-rectangular windows, one fixed 4-pane and the other now a top-hung casement. One 2-flue brick chimney on the centre of the ridge. Rear: blind except for a doorway and a window to each outer bay. Interior not inspected. (Note: rare example of little-altered domestic-industrial building, to be compared with Lilac Cottage, Clayton-le-Woods CP, q.v. which has same linear arrangement but with loomshops in centre).
